SA - FAQ11. Weather. Cape Town, our main South African destination, enjoys a Mediterranean style climate. Further inland, desert temperatures can climb considerably higher in summer and fall considerably lower in winter, with of course much less rainfall. Temperatures given above are average so daytime temperatures will be considerably higher, probably by about another 30-60%.

2. Safety. Despite rumours to the contrary, we have found the Cape a safe place to tour. We and our customers have never experienced anything but friendliness and warmth in the 13 years we have been offering tours and motorcycle hire.

3. What do I need to bring? We recommend you bring suitable motorcycle clothing, such as motorcycle leathers or an enduro suit as well as a helmet, gloves and motorcycle boots. Remember daytime temperatures from November to March will be high. Usually the climate in the region doesn’t require heavy rain protection, but we recommend lightweight waterproofs just in case. A warm sweater or fleece is recommended as the nights can be chilly. Sun block is essential. Laundry service is available en route. Helmets, gloves and goggles can be hired locally if prebooked.

4. Health and Malaria. The medical infrastructure in South Africa is generally of European standard. Our itineraries don’t cover any malaria risk areas (the last known incidence of malaria in the Kalahari was in 1923!). Malaria precautions are not indicated. Comprehensive travel and health insurance is required, available through H-C Travel for UK customers. Please be aware that AIDS/HIV is widespread.

5. Riding experience. Roads in South Africa are generally good and traffic relatively light (or sometimes non-existent!), so we place no restrictions on experience. For our self-guided adventure tours, offroad experience is not required (if I can do it two-up on a Tiger then so can any experienced road rider!), but encouraged. South African gravel and dirt roads are regularly graded and generally in good condition – you will probably see more potholes in London than on the road through the Cedarberg. There are sections that can be more challenging, but we will always offer you an alternative.

6. Accommodation. We try and use small hotels and guesthouses wherever possible, as we believe this gives you a much better experience of life in the Cape. Occasionally we have problems with availability, so the actual accommodation may differ if the given accommodation is fully booked. This applies particularly to late bookings.

7. Is South Africa expensive? NO, NO, NO! It probably offers the best value for money dining and shopping anywhere. You can often eat a tasty 3-course steak dinner for less than the price of the steak from the butcher in the UK.

SA - FAQ28. Can I stay longer? Yes, tell us what you would like to do and we’ll be happy to arrange it. Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula are well worth a few extra days if you have the time.

9. What else can H-C Travel arrange? As an ATOL bonded tour operator we are also able to arrange flights and travel insurance. And we can also arrange extensions to your tour to include game viewing in the Kruger National Park, rail journeys, accommodation only or car hire anywhere in South Africa as well. Carol is our expert on all sorts of travel and holiday arrangements in South Africa, so please give her a call. Just tell us your plans, however big, however small, and we’ll be happy to advise, we pride ourselves in our flexibility!
